The Backyard Nursery Program (BYN) enables village residents to create income from their existing assets, which usually include parcels of productive agricultural lands. ATP provides 1,200-1,500 seedlings to BYN families who care for and grow them over a two to three year period. ATP staff trains the landowners, supervises the planting, and monitors the site throughout the process. Once trees reach harvesting stage, ATP pays the Backyard Nursery owners for those trees which are then ready to be planted in community sites or in the forestry program. Those families then begin the nursery cycle again with a new crop of trees.
ATP created the BYN Program as a way to increase its overall tree yield and to offer remote villagers economic opportunity. 150 families in Armenia have harvested over 300,000 trees, increasing their family income by an average of 40%.
By sponsoring a Backyard Nursery, you’ll be participating in the growth of trees while creating a sustainable income source for village families who otherwise don’t have much employment opportunities in rural villages. Each BYN sponsorship is paired with a family in Armenia who is growing and caring for seedlings in their backyard. Sponsors will receive updates from the family throughout the year.
